Professional Stump Grinding for a Cleaner, Safer Landscape

4th Generation Tree provides efficient stump grinding and stump removal services throughout San Luis Obispo County, including San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Atascadero, Morro Bay, Nipomo, Templeton, Cambria, Arroyo Grande, and surrounding communities. With more than 70 years of local experience, our team uses specialized equipment and low-impact techniques to remove unwanted stumps, reduce regrowth, protect surrounding landscaping, and prepare properties for new planting, construction, or other improvements.

Benefits of Professional Stump Grinding

Eliminate Safety Hazards

Removing exposed stumps and roots helps reduce tripping hazards and creates a safer, more accessible landscape.

Prevent Unwanted Regrowth

Grinding stumps below the surface helps reduce sprouting and prevents old root systems from continuing to produce unwanted growth.

Protect Your Landscape

Our low-impact equipment and careful techniques are designed to remove stumps without unnecessarily damaging lawns, nearby trees, irrigation systems, or surrounding structures.

Prepare the Area for New Use

Once the stump is removed, the space can be prepared for new landscaping, sod, tree planting, hardscape installation, construction, or other improvements.

What drives the price

01

Access

Can a chipper and a grapple truck get within reach of the trunk, or is everything coming out through a 36-inch gate by hand? This is the single biggest variable.

02

Drop zone

Open ground under the canopy means we can fell and buck. A pool, a patio or a neighbour's roof underneath means rigging or a crane, and the day gets longer.

03

Size, species and condition

Green oak weighs far more than dry pine of the same diameter, and a decayed trunk can't be climbed — both change the method before they change the price.

04

Stump and debris

Grinding is quoted with the removal. Say the word and we leave the rounds bucked for firewood, or chip everything and haul it out.

HOW IT COMES DOWN

Climbed, rigged or picked by crane

The method is decided on site by the arborist, not sold to you in advance. A tree in the open gets felled. A tree over a roof gets rigged down piece by piece, or lifted out whole by crane when that is faster and safer for the structure underneath.

Stump grinding questions

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Stump grinding uses specialized equipment to grind the stump below ground level, while complete stump removal may involve removing a larger portion of the stump and root system. Grinding is often the preferred option because it is efficient, less disruptive, and leaves the area ready for landscaping or other uses.

The grinding depth depends on the stump, root system, and plans for the area. Stumps are typically ground below grade so the area can be covered with soil, replanted, landscaped, or prepared for another project.

Grinding the stump significantly reduces the likelihood of regrowth, although some tree species may produce new shoots from remaining roots. Additional root tracing or treatment may be recommended when aggressive regrowth is a concern.

Yes. 4th Generation Tree uses different-sized stump grinders that allow our crews to work in residential yards, narrow access areas, vineyards, ranches, commercial properties, and other challenging locations.

The resulting wood chips can either be removed from the property or left behind for use as natural mulch. Our team can recommend the best option based on your landscaping plans and preferences.

What clients say

★★★★★

I love working with local family owned businesses, and they exceeded expectations! Hard working crew, especially Jeferson the lead, he was extremely knowledgeable on pruning our oaks. We’re on almost three acres, and our views have never been better.

Morgan and his team at 4th Generation Tree were a HUGE help to us. They were easy to work with, flexible, and very accommodating as we worked through several tree removal and trimming needs across our church property. Their work improved both the safety and appearance of our grounds. I highly recommend!!!

Garrett Kruse

★★★★★

Casey, Morgan, and their crew at 4th Generation did a great job trimming our Oak trees, removing three big pines and grinding the stumps. It was a big job and they managed it perfectly! They have been trimming our oak trees for years and we are always happy with the results! Thanks again!
